About this work
A hand-colored print titled The Greasy Pole, dated 1815 and attributed to an anonymous French artist of the 19th century, shows three men struggling up a tall pole. At the top hang medals, a bishop's crozier and a mitre, and a banner inscribed with the date and phrases about rights and privileges, while one climber is marked as a ministry. A figure dangling below the pole and a fallen man at its base add to the satirical scene.
