About this work

This etching shows a busy public square dominated by a tall, slender brick tower beside a long Gothic-arched palazzo, with crowds of figures moving across the paving. Market stalls and a horse-drawn cart appear along the edges, and the sparse hatching gives the scene an open, airy feel. The print is an anonymous Italian work from the 17th century, dated c. 1610-1660, and was formerly attributed to Jacques Callot.
