About this work
This 1550 print, published under Antonio Salamanca and listed as Italian 16th century, shows the rear view of the colossal marble horse-tamer statues on the Quirinal Hill in Rome, set among crumbling brick walls. Two figures in the foreground, one seated with a sketchbook and one standing and pointing, record the scene. A Latin inscription in the lower margin identifies the statues as the work of Praxiteles and Phidias.
