About this work
A brown ink and wash drawing shows an elderly bearded man in a flowing cloak embracing a kneeling, barefoot younger man who leans against a walking staff. A bare tree and rocky ground fill the landscape, with a cloudy sky above. The work is catalogued as Return of the Prodigal Son, attributed to an anonymous Bohemian artist, dated c. 1720, and held by the National Gallery of Art.
