This monochrome landscape shows a wide, curving bay with a pale sandy shore receding toward a calm sea under a hazy, overcast sky. A rocky, cliffed headland rises on the right, while a dirt track and wooden fencing lead the eye across grassy ground in the foreground, where a horse and cart and small figures appear. The painting, titled At the Shore, was made by Winckworth Allan Gay in 1860 and is held by the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
