About this work
A seated woman in a pale silk gown embroidered with blue and yellow floral motifs rests her chin on one hand at a glossy red table, a pink bow and blue ribbon at her bodice. Her piled hair is topped with a white lace cap, and a dark background isolates her figure. The painting is John Singleton Copley's 1772 portrait Mrs. Richard Skinner (Dorothy Wendell), held by the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
