A trompe l'oeil still life shows a pink metal letter rack crowded with envelopes bearing 1894 postmarks, a red book, a yellow envelope, and a small card with a bearded man's portrait. A clay pipe, a torn cerulean label, and newspaper scraps are scattered across a dark wooden board painted in Peto's characteristic worn-surface manner. The work is John F. Peto's 1894 painting Old Time Letter Rack.
