About this work

This black and white engraved print shows a crowded street scene in front of a wooden porch, where a banner reads 'The Will of the People the Supreme Law.' Men in top hats and work clothes gather, while a seated man at a table laughs, boys sit on the dirt road, and a dog wanders through the crowd. Rows of trees and small houses extend into the distance under a cloudy sky. The print is by John Sartain, dated 1847, and is held by The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
