About this work

A pencil sketch shows a man in a tricorn hat and knee breeches reaching toward a woman in a full skirted gown, while a second woman stands beside them under tall trees. The study is drawn on a warm buff paper and includes a fence and a small building in the background. This preparatory drawing by Hubert François Gravelot, dated ca. 1737, was made for the etched vignette "The Faithful Lovers, a Duette" in Songs in the Opera of Flora.
