About this work
A pen and gray wash study shows two women in long gowns at the left, one reaching toward the other, while a man in a short tunic and tights gestures outward at the right beside a balustrade and a leaning ladder. The loose sketch of trees and classical architecture forms the setting. This drawing by Hubert François Gravelot, ca. 1737, is a study for the etched vignette "Hob Taken Out of Ye Well" in Songs in the Opera of Flora, held by The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
