About this work

A man in a broad-brimmed hat works a foot-powered grinding wheel in a sunlit courtyard, sharpening a blade against the spinning stone. A seated woman nearby, a dog beside her, and another dog resting in the distance accompany the scene, while a horse stands in a stable doorway. This painting, The Grinder, was made by Alexandre-Gabriel Decamps in 1840 and is held by the Musée du Louvre.
