About this work

An oil painting shows a man in a blue coat richly embroidered with gold, wearing a plumed tricorn hat and seated on a rearing white horse with a gold-ornamented bridle. A sword hangs at his side, and a red and gold saddle cloth covers the horse's back. Behind them, a battlefield with soldiers, smoke and a distant fortress unfolds under a darkening sky. The work is a 1679 painting by René-Antoine Houasse held by the Musée du Louvre.
