About this work
This oil painting shows a mythological abduction scene in a garden setting, with a bearded god in a red cloak riding a dark horse with a trident and cupids flying overhead. Women in pink, gold and blue drapery gather flowers and garlands beside a classical statue on a pedestal, while a basket of blossoms sits in the foreground. Joseph-Marie Vien painted L'Enlèvement de Proserpine in 1757, and the work is held by the Musée du Louvre, Department of Paintings.
