About this work

A muted, sepia-toned panoramic view of a steep mountain valley dense with conifers, with rocky cliffs rising above. In the foreground a formal gathering of mounted riders, a horse-drawn carriage, white tents and a crowd of figures gathers around a tall lone tree, while a large heraldic shield with a mythical beast stands at the lower right. This painting by Johann Veit Hauck, dated 1738, is held by the Kunsthistorisches Museum and depicts Emperor Charles VI (1685-1740) inspecting the chamois hunting grounds at Eisenerz.
