About this work
A seated woman in a gold and grey gown, wearing a jeweled headdress, extends her hand toward a bare-chested man who holds a pair of shears over an animal hide. Two attendants look on from behind her, and the scene is set against a blue-grey sky. Giambattista Pittoni painted this work, titled Dido Founding Carthage, in 1720, and it is held by the Hermitage Museum.
