About this work

A seated man in a black robe and white collar rests his arm on a desk piled with folded documents and letters, one bearing a red wax seal. Behind him, a wooden cabinet of small compartments and a shelf of rolled papers fill the room, with a dark curtain drawn at the right. Michiel van Musscher painted this Portrait of a Notary in 1661, now in the Hermitage Museum.
