About this work

A turbulent seascape shows several sailing ships battling heavy waves under a sky of dense, gold-grey clouds. The large ship in the foreground heels over with its sails billowing, while smaller vessels and a distant ship with a puff of smoke appear across the water. Painted in 1640 by Andries van Eertvelt and held by the Hermitage Museum, the work is titled Stormy Sea.
