About this work
This painting depicts a wooded landscape in which a seated, bearded figure reads an open book while nude and monstrous figures crowd around him. A skeletal winged creature rises among the trees, and a nude figure flies through the upper right, set against a cloudy sky. The work is attributed to Sebastiano Ricci, dated 1706, and held by the Hermitage Museum.
