About this work

This painting shows the nave of a Gothic church, with tall stone columns, ribbed vaulting and tall pointed windows receding toward a distant choir. Richly framed altarpieces line the side aisles, and a crucifix hangs above the central space where figures in period dress stroll and pray across a black and white checkered floor. Pieter Neefs the Elder painted it in 1610, and it is held by the Hermitage Museum.
