About this work

A richly dressed rider in a plumed hat and gold-embroidered red coat sits on a rearing dappled grey horse, gazing toward the viewer. Behind him a wide river valley opens onto a distant town, a fortified hill, and a military encampment of tents with mounted soldiers, some smoke rising from the field. This is Louis XIV at the Taking of Besancon by Adam Frans van der Meulen, dated 1674, in the Hermitage Museum.
