About this work
This 1863 painting by Martin Johnson Heade, titled Fork-tailed Woodnymph, shows two iridescent green hummingbirds, one with a violet throat, among pink trumpet-shaped flowers and tangled branches. A moss-covered nest with two chicks sits low in the composition, and a blue and green butterfly drifts above. The muted grey sky and hanging epiphytes create a quiet, tropical setting.
