About this work
A dark vanitas still life shows a gilded skull wrapped in gold vine leaves on a draped table, beside a nautilus cup topped with a small gilded figure. An open book with the Latin inscription "Nemo ante mortem beatus dici potest" and an engraved portrait of Julius Caesar with a laurel wreath and scepter appear among pearls, jewelry and a red-lined box. The work is attributed to Evert Collier.
