About this work
This impressionist painting by Ernest Lawson, dated 1915, shows the Harlem River beneath a stone arched bridge with a small tugboat on the water. A tall steeple and a row of buildings crown the rocky hillside on the far bank, under a pale, cloudy sky. Thick, broken brushwork renders the textured water and bare early-season trees in the foreground.
