About this work
This large painting shows a reclining bearded river god, crowned with reeds, enthroned on the water beside a cornucopia-like basket and a dish of offerings. Above him a winged youth in a helmet, identifiable as Mercury, blows a trumpet and flies across a dusky sky, while nude sea nymphs and robed figures crowd the water around a tall tower and distant ships.
