About this work
This pastel-like painting shows several dark gondolas with tall pale prows moving across a night canal, their hulls dotted with glowing lanterns. Golden light reflects on the rippling water and along the arcaded building lining the far shore. The work is attributed to Lucien Lévy-Dhurmer and dated 1895.
