About this work
An oil sketch by Edmond-Louis Dupain depicts two haloed saints led forward through a crowd beneath a city wall, one raising an arm toward a winged angel descending with a palm of martyrdom. Soldiers with spears and a banner stand in the background, while an executioner holding an axe stands at right. The work is a study for the church of Pierrefitte, as noted in its title.
