About this work
This oil sketch shows a kneeling figure in a dark blue cloak offering a small object at a stone altar, while a haloed Virgin holding the Christ child appears among clouds and angels above. The loose, rapid brushwork and muted palette suggest a preparatory study, and the plaque on the frame identifies it as a sketch by Ferdinand Humbert for the Panthéon.
