This large horizontal painted sketch shows a busy waterfront where workers handle bales and sacks beside a steamship, while oxen pull a cart past ruined Corinthian columns. On the right, merchants in varied regional dress trade goods near moored sailing vessels and a calm sea, all rendered in loose, sketch-like brushwork. The work is catalogued as an esquisse by Marie-Félix-Hippolyte Lucas, dated 1889, for the Bourse du Commerce in Paris.
