About this work

This painting by James E. Buttersworth depicts the sloop Phillip R. Paulding heeling through choppy green water under a broad set of cream sails, with a pennant bearing the vessel's name and a flag of stars and stripes flying from the rigging. A second sailing vessel and a low wooded shoreline appear in the distance beneath a dramatic, cloud-filled sky tinged with pink and blue.
