A small sailing ship rests on a calm stretch of dark water beneath a pale full moon partly veiled by clouds. Moonlight glitters across the waves toward the viewer, while the sky and the distant shoreline fade into deep shadow. The painting, "The Black Sea at night" by Ivan Aivazovsky, dates from 1879.
