About this work

A chromolithographed poster for the opera Esclarmonde shows a woman in an ornate embroidered gown and dark flowing cloak, arms raised and holding a white veil before a gold circular halo. She stands on marble steps flanked by carved stone columns, with floral sprigs at her feet. The printed text names the Théâtre National de l'Opéra-Comique, the libretto by Alfred Blau and Louis de Gramont, the music by J. Massenet, and the publisher G. Hartmann et Cie, with the artist signature G. Clairin visible in the lower left, dated 1889.
