About this work

This lithographic poster advertises the Böcklin Jubiläum exhibition in Basel, announced as the Kunsthalle showing from 20 September to 24 October 1897. The upper panel depicts a muscular centaur raising a large stone overhead against billowing clouds and a dark, rocky ground, rendered in browns, tans and blue accents. The lower blue panel carries the bold white title lettering and a sprig of foliage, framed by a leafy green and ochre border. The work is credited to Hans Sandreuter.
