About this work

This painting depicts the Nativity, showing the Virgin Mary kneeling beside a manger where the infant Christ lies on straw. An ox and a donkey look over the manger while several angels attend the scene, and a man in a red cloak carrying a bundle of straw stands at the right. The landscape visible through the open stable wall and the warm earthen ground complete the scene.
