About this work
This painting, titled Penelope sacrificing to Minerva for the Safe Return of her Son, Telemachus, is attributed to Angelica Kauffmann and dated 1774. A richly dressed woman in a white and gold gown raises her hand toward a statue of Minerva holding a spear, set atop a classical stone pedestal. Attendants in dark and blue garments assist with the offering while classical columns and a red drapery frame the scene.
