About this work
A monochrome brown study shows a crowded interior in which a figure in ceremonial robes slumps in a chair while attendants and onlookers gather around him. Several figures raise their hands or lean in with concern, and a standing attendant in a fur-trimmed mantle occupies the right foreground. This is John Singleton Copley's study for The Collapse of the Earl of Chatham, dated 1779.
