About this work
A nude man lies on the grass, tangled beneath a dark grey horse, while a herd of white, grey, and dark horses gallops past under a stormy, moonlit sky beside a windswept fir tree. The composition follows the record of an 1833 print after Horace Vernet's painting, Mazeppa Surrounded by Horses.
