About this work

A turbulent sea scene shows a low, dark turret ship firing a salute that releases a large cloud of white smoke, its masts and rigging hung with flags. Surrounding vessels include sailing ships, a steam launch and a rowing boat, all under a broken, cloudy sky. The work is Edward William Cooke's 1875 depiction of HM Turret Ship Devastation at Spithead during the naval review held in honour of the Shah of Persia on 23 June 1873.
