About this work

The painting shows the Virgin Mary in a red bodice and blue mantle seated on a wooden bench, holding the infant Christ in a forest clearing filled with peonies, irises and an apple tree. A small village with a tower and a distant mountain range appear on the right, and a basket and folded cloth rest at her side.
