About this work

This lithograph in sepia tones shows a rowboat of men approaching a fortified gate, where a stout official with a staff and a tall hat spreads his arms to block them. Spectators and cannons line the ramparts above, and the scene is signed by Andreas Achenbach and dated 1848 with a printer credit to Arnz & Co. in Düsseldorf.
