About this work

An engraved satirical scene shows a fashionably dressed woman whose towering headdress rises above her, nearly touching a framed landscape painting of mountains and a lake. A gentleman in a period coat reacts with alarm beside a fallen hat, while cats and a caged bird occupy the room. The print is titled The French Lady in London, or the Head Dress for the Year 1771, by Samuel Hieronymus Grimm, dated 1771.
