About this work

An engraved print titled The Overflowing of the Pitt, created after an original drawing by Samuel Hieronymus Grimm and printed for S. Sledge in Henrietta Street, Covent Garden. It shows a cramped theatre stairway where well-dressed men and women tumble over one another while a man in a wig gestures from above, with candle sconces lighting the scene. The caption quotes Pope's The Rape of the Lock and the sheet is dated 25 June 1771 in its imprint.
