About this work

This engraved oval portrait shows a man in profile wearing a laurel wreath and a high-collared garment with buttons, framed by the inscription DANTES ALIGERUS FLORENTINUS. A Latin verse printed beneath the image praises the poet, and the crosshatched linework creates the shading across the face and clothing.
