About this work
A Sporting Contest on the Tiber by Joseph Vernet, dated 1750, shows a crowded riverside scene with rowing boats racing across the water. Elegantly dressed spectators gather on the quay and under a blue-and-white striped canopy, while a round fortress and an arched stone bridge rise in the background beneath a dramatic cloudy sky.
