About this work

A hand-colored plate shows a black skimmer in low flight over choppy dark water, with its long red-and-black bill open and wings extended against a pale cloudy sky. The printed caption reads Black Skimmer or Shearwater, with plate number CCCXXIII and specimen number 65, consistent with John James Audubon's bird illustrations.
