About this work

This painted scene shows a group of classically dressed figures gathered before a marble-columned terrace with a bronze-colored statue on a pedestal. A woman in a white gown and pink mantle gestures toward a bearded man in a gray hooded robe, while a curly-haired boy in green reaches toward her and a helmeted soldier holds a spear nearby. Gerard Hoet's 1733 work, titled Olympias presenting the young Alexander the Great to Aristotle, depicts this historical encounter with classical architecture and a distant tower in the landscape.
