About this work

This hand-colored engraved plate shows two shorebirds on a rocky ledge beside still water, with tall grasses behind them. One bird, with a dark-streaked brown back, probes the water with its long bill, while the other, with a rusty-orange head and breast, stands upright at the edge of the rock. The plate, titled Pygmy Curlew, is by John James Audubon and carries the plate number CCLXIII at the upper right.
