About this work
This hand-coloured lithograph, plate 45 from the second part of Jean-Baptiste Debret's work, is shown with two scenes. The upper scene depicts a public flogging in a town square, where a bound man is tied to a post while a figure raises a whip, watched by uniformed soldiers and a crowd, with a church tower behind. The lower scene shows several enslaved men confined on the floor of a building, some fastened to a wooden frame, with mats, bowls and tools around them.
