About this work

A flood-damaged riverside scene shows dark embankments breached by rising water, with broken wooden poles, scattered debris, and small figures standing on a raised bank. Distant houses and a cloud-filled sky sit beneath a pale, stormy light. The work is an etched print from 1855 by Cornelis Springer, number 3 in the series on the 1855 flood disaster.
