Gustave Cariot's 1930 painting Les meules de foin shows rows of bound sheaves of cut grain standing in a golden-green field under a pale cloudy sky. A line of small trees and a dense wooded hillside stretch across the background, with a distant ridge beyond. The loose, dabbed brushwork renders the straw, grass and foliage in warm yellows, greens and blues.
