The painting shows a standing guard in a white robe and red hood, holding an ornate staff and wearing a sword at his waist, beside a metal incense burner releasing a thin trail of smoke. He stands on stone steps before a richly patterned red curtain and a carved stone wall, with a hanging lantern above. The work is signed and dated Paris 1907 and is attributed to Ludwig Deutsch.
